NOTES ON ZOILA

Zoila decipiens E A Smith, 1880  A moderately common species found from Exmouth on the N/W coast of Australia up to the Australia, NT border.
Zoila eludens Raybaudi, 1991  A species from Exmouth, Australia, WA, Z. eludens was once extremely rare. It then became moderately available and now numbers are limited again. The very small local habitat and limited population size could see this shell become very rare again.
Zoila friendii Gray, 1831  A moderately uncommon species (particularly in GEM condition), found between Esperance (subspecies vercoi) and Geraldton on the west coast of Australia, WA.
Zoila friendii vercoi Schilder,1930  The eastern range form of Zoila friendii local to the Albany to Esperance area - a variable species with a wide range of sizes, shapes and colour forms.
Zoila jeaniana Cate, 1968  Long considered the northern form of Zoila friendii, Z. jeaniana is a valid species with at least 4 population variants. It occupies the central west coast of WA from Geraldton to Exmouth.
Zoila jeaniana aurata Raybaudi, 1979  This form has now become rare.
Zoila jeaniana sherylae Raybaudi, 1990  These shells are taken in the Carnarvon area by divers in depths of 30-40 metres.
Zoila ketyana hypermarginata Raybaudi, 1978  This population shows pale dorsum and orange/brown stained ventral side and extends from the Abrolhos Islands to Coral Bay, just south of Exmouth on the N/W coast of Australia, WA.
Zoila ketyana lutea Raybaudi, 1993  Similar to the pale dorsum form, but with a striking yellow or orange base; only from near Dirk Hartog Island, central coast of Australia, WA.
Zoila marginata Gaskoin, 1849  The species has the widest range of all Zoila. Various forms are found from the cold temperate waters of Australia, SA to the tropical reefs of Exmouth on the central WA coast. Zoila marginata is uncommon anywhere throughout its range - this in combination with the difficulty of obtaining shells in good condition ensures that quality specimens remain rare.
Zoila marginata albanyensis Raybaudi, 1985  A local Albany to Esperance, Australia, WA population.
Zoila marginata orientalis Raybaudi, 1985  The Australia, SAn form of Zoila marginata - generally larger and more globose shells than Australia, WAn forms.
Zoila rosselli Cotton, 1948  Found only in Australia, WA, the beautiful dark Zoila rosselli has three distinct populations but remains stable in shape throughout its range.
Zoila thersites Gaskoin, 1849   Zoila thersites only occurs in Australia, SA
Zoila thersites contraria Gaskoin, 1849  The pale deep water form of Zoila thersites
Zoila venusta venusta Sowerby, 1846  Many collectors consider Zoila venusta the most desirable shell of the genus. Certainly the diversity within the species is amazing and has led to a great deal of separate naming of individual populations. Except for Zoila venusta sorrentensis, all forms are uncommon to rare and to obtain truly GEM shells is very difficult. There are at least six distinct populations and within each group the range of colours can extend from deepest black to purest white.
Zoila venusta venusta Sowerby, 1846  Zoila venusta from the Esperance area population on the south coast of Australia, WA show the most amazing range of colours and patterns.
Zoila venusta venusta Sowerby, 1846  Zoila venusta from the Albany population on the south coast of Australia, WA are similar to the Esperance shells but without the pink or purple tones.
Zoila venusta episema Iredale, 1939  The episema form of Z. venusta is found from around the S/W corner of Australia, WA up to the Bunbury area and is very consistent in colour and size. The shells are always larger than 60mm and have a dark brown mottled dorsum.
Zoila venusta sorrentensis Schilder, 1963  The sorrentensis form of Z. venusta is the smallest and most common of the venusta complex. They are found from Mandurah to Lancelin on the west coast of WA and include the Rottnest Island population.
